So (‘American Babylon’) was a career-saving thing. I was really desperate, just spinning my wheels. I had a day job and was (playing) three nights a week, so it was basically like working two jobs, six days a week.
I was doing one terrible gig after another. “I had done a record (1994’s ‘End of the Century’), which I thought was a really good record, but it didn’t sell. Grushecky recalls by phone that he was “at my lowest ebb” when he set out to do the “American Babylon” album.29, and celebrates a shining moment in Grushecky’s long, and continuing, career.

Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers’ album “American Babylon” was written and recorded with help from Bruce Springsteen. That made news when it was released back in 1995, and Springsteen upped the ante by doing a brief tour with the Houserockers to promote it. Springsteen was amenable, producing, playing and co-writing songs for “American Babylon,” Grushecky’s eighth album with the Houserockers. He never lost the rock ‘n’ roll jones, however, and as he began thinking about his new album Grushecky’s wife suggested calling on an old friend to help out - Bruce Springsteen. The veteran Pittsburgh rocker, best known for leading the Iron City Houserockers, had returned to “mainstream society” during the early ’90s, working as a special-education instructor in the public school system. Twenty-six years ago, Joe Grushecky got a solid from an old friend.
